The Rethink Game

The REThink Game

Online therapeutic game based on psychological science.

REThink is an online therapeutic game, developed based on the latest advancements in psychological science and aimed at supporting the emotional health of young people. The actions and components of the game are based on Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT), which is a form of cognitive-behavioral psychotherapy and which holds the premise that emotions are not directly caused by external events, but by the existing thoughts and beliefs about the external events. The REThink game was developed at the DATA Lab as an accessible, attractive, and effective intervention for preventing emotional disorders in young people. The results of over a decade of research implemented in the DATA Lab and with independent teams (e.g, Dusseldorf University Hospital) demonstrated its effectiveness in improving emotional regulation skills, reducing emotional symptoms such as anxiety or depressive mood, and cognitive biases. Check out our publications! The first version of the game was developed to operate on iOS mobile devices, while later the therapeutic video game was re-implemented and expanded, with the new version of the game operating on all mobile devices, with Android and iOS operating systems and also on web. More recently, we developed a 3D and VR version of the game for young adults, called REThink LIFE and we present both versions below.

REThink Game Sneak Peek

The REThink game is built around the character RETMAN, who guides players through the 7 levels of the game to save the planet and learn the habits of the good mind and happiness. Each level trains a distinct emotional regulation skill and consists of three sub-levels, increasing in difficulty as the player advances. The game can be administered as a standalone intervention, as an adjunct to a self-help psychotherapeutic intervention, or for training specific skills using individual levels.
